Born To Sing 1000 – Thousand Voice Choir + More At Perth Concert Hall, 11 June 2023

Perth Concert Hall will play host to a very special event on Sunday 11 June 2023 from 5pm to 7.30pm when a 1000-voice choir and many others take over the venue for one evening only.

The Born To Sing 1000 event features:

– a 1000 voice choir encompassing several local and WA choirs plus many individuals in four-part harmonies
– 250 ukulele players
– seven-piece jazz band featuring Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts graduates
– Perth Highland Pipe Band
– a few extra surprises some of which not even the choir knows about yet.

At the time of publishing this short article, about 80% of the tickets have been sold, and the rest will go quickly. So if you want to experience this amazing live event, go to: www.perthconcerthall.com.au/events/event/born-to-sing immediately if not sooner.

The concert runs from 5pm to 7.30pm with a 25-minute interval at 6pm. Food and beverages will be available.

Some funds raised through ticket prices will go to the Fiona Stanley Hospital Cancer Clinical Trials Fund.

Posting this one up just a little bit late in the piece, so hopefully late is better than never.

I had the pleasure of talking with a number of interesting locals and visitors to Australia at the 2013 Illawarra Folk Festival back in January, and Rick Nestler was one of those.

It was a classic piece of going in cold as I knew little more about Rick than his name and how to pick him out of a line-up. However, as is often the case, the interviewee was interesting, obliging, funny and articulate.

This is the second in a (very) occasional series that’s taking a casual glance at what’s being done in the realm of folk for and by kids. Back in

T&N: Mike, what are you doing here?

Mike: 16 performances! Kids’ performers tend to be the work horses; we basically are often multi-talented and we have to be able to perform for adults and for kids. This festival fortunately I’m doing just kids’ performances so I’ve got time to concentrate down here.

It’s a wonderful life, it really is.

Why do we do what we do? I think initially it was a second string to be an adult performer: you were sent off down to the kids to make them happy for a while. In my case, it became a profession fairly early in the piece.

What am I trying to do for kids? Pass on some of the traditions that my grand-parents and parents passed on to me. It’s an ongoing thing; I’m basically entertaining but teaching as I go about the music and about the instruments that I play. Continue reading →
