A Tumblr Down An Old Rabbit Hole: Life’s Noisy — Use Earplugs

Life’s Noisy — Use Earplugs (And Eat Dijonnaise Porridge)

I could say that at 1.11am on Monday 29 April 2014 at the Sydney Railway Square Youth Hostels Australia (YHA) was the moment when I stopped blaming others for my woes and troubles and accepted that I’m the master of my own disaster.

Except I made that realisation many years ago, and so it was at 1.11am this morning that I didn’t have an insight about my culpability in this world, but fervently wished that the wally in the bed underneath mine would have had such a personal breakthrough because he was acting like a twat.

Alors. I snore. Loudly. And had probably been doing so for a couple of hours from 9pm onwards, when I was probably inconveniencing few, until just prior to midnight when I awoke with one of those ‘I’m awake for a reason’ feelings.

Chummy in the bed below me had been rearranging his meagre belongings for an age while I’d been slipping in and out of sleep. But at 11.51pm he must have decided he now had an entitlement to free airwaves, and started violently shaking the bed every time I started drifting off.

Either that or he has a most concentrated and intermittent masturbation practice. Whatever gets you there.

Phillips Wealth Partners: A Client Review

I am such a big fan of Phillips Wealth Partners as a 3yrs+ client. I am only giving them five stars because that’s the highest I can go. If I could give them 15 stars, I would.

I contacted Craig (owner and principal) in 2018 when I had money to invest and have managed. Craig came highly recommended by a trusted business associate in Canberra: Andre Ferreira who has worked for many years in insurance and was at the time associated with PWP. (Andre has since remained in the industry but gone on to another company.)

Craig could not do enough for me. He met with me for an initial consultation and listened attentively to my situation and needs. And then we went off and designed a portfolio that was attuned to my needs.

I had some initial concerns, solely based on my almost complete lack of understanding of how the share market worked, and how a then volatile world financial situation would initially affect my holdings. My bottom line took a bit of a dip. There were so many reasons: mostly to do with a certain tangerine-coloured, barely literate then-president of a very large north-American country.

I’m not kidding. I would wake up in the morning, check the news, hear something stupid he’d said, then check my balance on line, and find my holdings had dipped by $5-$10K.

In time, it stablised. But while I had the wobbles, I contacted Craig several times and he walked me through the reasons why I should not worry – on the phone and in writing, backed up with stats and other evidence.

He was right. Not only did things recover, my bottom line started to increase. Slowly, steadily, and surely, based on a mix of very risk averse, mostly risk averse, and just a sliver of more speculative stocks.

Over time, I have sold off chunks of shares to get capital and spending money – mostly spending money! – to fund a lot of travel and costs related to my businesses. The process has been seamless and easy. Despite my having withdrawn close to 10% of my initial outlay, as of this minute: I’m still $7K in the black.

I credit Craig and his team at PWP with that result. In this 2021-22 financial year, I plan to contract PWP to take a more active part in my business operations, and any fees will be money well-spent.

Some dot points on the value I get from PWP:

– Accessibility: always available either immediately by phone or email, or timely responses;

– Personable: Craig is amazingly engaging and interesting – ask him about his interests in charity work, cycling, and providing pro-bono work to support the financial wellbeing of the elderly;

– Extensive: I don’t drown in paperwork, but PWP back up all their decisions, changes, fees, outcomes, and reviews with really useful charts, spreadsheets, explanatory notes, and covering letter info. Craig will take time to walk me through all of the above at regularly reviews and as requested.

– Ad hoc. I try not to pepper PWP with additional requests, but at times when needed, I’ve spoken with Craig to get clarification on ad hoc matters. Again, getting back to accessibility, I’ve always received timely replies. If anything, he’s accessibile to a fault. “Let it go to voicemail if you’re busy!” I try to coach him. 🙂

– Credible and dependable. You know what? By now I reckon I’ve stated the case where you can work out from the above why I’d say PWP tick all the boxes here.

Again, I highly recommend PWP and Craig specifically as a personal financial adviser. If you’d like a personal chat with me to ask specific questions about any of the above or your own questions, either ask Craig for my contact details or ask me directly via www dot Overheard Productions dot com – Contact page.

As You Fall: Don’t Forget To Stop And Smell The Tomatoes

Bill and Ted’s Perfectly Excellent Adventure Day 31 of 45 at Dr Gillette, Rue d’Édouard, Meanjin (Edward Street, Brisbane, Queensland

TRIGGERS: TRAUMA, INJURIES

Firstly, please don’t freak because the song’s called ‘As You Fall’ and I’m standing on a balcony. It’s one floor up, I’m watching the sun come up, listening to the dawn chorus, and there’s a corrugated roof about one metre below. I’m fine!

But this spot reminded me of something that happened when I was about 10yrs old. When Dad was out or away on work, we kids would shinny up a ladder, walk gingerly across the garage roof, and sit with our legs dangling over the edge, about a metre above Dad’s glasshouse roof, and we’d chat and watch the traffic at the corner of Antil Street and Northbourne Avenue, Downer ACT.

One night, we’d finished up our sit and watch session, I forgot momentarily, stood up and:

Shot straight through the glasshouse pain glass roof and fell into Dad’s tomato plants. I left a lot of shin skin on my plummet downwards and lost a lot of claret! Swore my siblings to secrecy, spent the next half hour in the bathroom on clean up, patch and repair, and staunched the flow.

Got up at sparrow’s the next morning and boarded a bus with my band colleagues to attend a competition at Chevalier Daramalan College Alumni sister college in Bowral. Probably still in shock.

It didn’t really affect my performance; I was only ever an average tenor horn player at best. And never mind I now gently urge musicians old and young not to self-deprecate*; that is a fair self-assessment and my band leader was in furious agreement!

It wasn’t my first accident waiting to happen** – that was probably age three when I stuck a fork in a power socket and shot back across the room.

And it sure as shit was not my last. I’ve been tripping, crashing, stumbling, teetering, tottering, and falling ever since. As I get older, I don’t particularly get wiser – I just learn and apply coping and mitigating strategies. I’m not better or worse than any other sentient being – I probably do though spend more time in Accident & Emergency than the average bear. 🐻

You can read about my latest trip to the Emergency Department of you scroll back – Sunday 24 May 2026. I sang Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd as St John Ambulance 🚑 paramedics wheeled me from triage to first level care. Emily was pushing the gurney and she did the harmony with me.

Music is one of my trauma coping strategies, and this song is one of them. As You Fall by Bent.
